Matthew van Tongeren terug in Gelderland

Matthew van Tongeren speelt aankomend seizoen voor het eredivisieteam van Basketball Community Gelderland. De 2.01 lange power forward speelde vorig seizoen voor Apollo Amsterdam.

De 27 jarige Matthew, met Gelderlandse roots, is begonnen met basketball bij Pluto in Wageningen. Zijn DBL avontuur begon in 2011 bij Eiffel Towers Den Bosch, waar hij zowel voor het eerste team speelde als het U20 team. Na een kort verblijf in Amsterdam keert hij terug naar Gelderland, om te spelen voor de Matrixx Magixx. In 2016 maakt hij vervolgens de overstap naar Weert, waar hij twee uitstekende seizoenen draait, met in zijn laatste seizoen gemiddeld 11 punten en 4 rebounds. Na twee jaar Amsterdam verruilt hij de hoofdstad voor Gelderland en speelt hij aankomend seizoen voor het team van Basketball Community Gelderland.

Matthew: ‘Ik ben geboren en getogen in Gelderland en om dan eredivisie basketball terug te zien na jaren afwezigheid… dat is prachtig! Ik vind het belangrijk om hieraan mee te werken. We hebben de kern staan, een bestuur en coaching staff met een visie om te groeien. En met de spelers in onze selectie kunnen we iets moois laten zien.’’

Coach Matthew Otten: ‘’Ik was erg onder de indruk van Matthew toen ik hem deze zomer zag. Hij heeft hard getraind met het 3×3 Nederlands Team. Hij is een belangrijk onderdeel van ons team, met een geweldig karakter binnen en buiten het veld. Uiteraard is het ook speciaal dat hij uit Gelderland komt.’’

Matthew van Tongeren back in Gelderland

Matthew van Tongeren will play for the DBL team of Basketball Community Gelderland next season. The 2.01 power forward played for Apollo Amsterdam last season.

27-year-old Matthew, with Gelderland roots, started playing basketball at Pluto in Wageningen. His DBL adventure started in 2011 at Eiffel Towers Den Bosch, where he played for both the first team and the U20 team. After a short stay in Amsterdam, he returned to Gelderland to play for the Matrixx Magixx. In 2016 he transferred to Weert, where he had two excellent seasons, averaging 11 points and 4 rebounds in his last season. After two years in Amsterdam, he will exchange the capital for Gelderland and will play for the Basketball Community Gelderland team next season.

Matthew: “I was born and raised in Gelderland and to see eredivisie basketball again after years of absence … that’s wonderful! I think it is important to be a part of this. We have a strong core, a board and coaching staff with a vision to grow. And we can show something beautiful with the players in our squad.”

I was impressed with Matthew progress on the court when I saw him this summer. He’s putting in the work while training with 3×3 National Team. He is an important piece, a great character to have on and off the court, and it’s also special that he comes from Gelderland.’’
